Unwittingly, Leonor of Spain found herself at the heart of a lively controversy. At 16, the daughter of Queen Letizia is talking about her again.
In 2021, a TV author was fired after a bad joke about Leonor of Spain
The Crown had asked for his dismissal
The Court ruled and rendered its verdict
A sentence that had caused a real outcry. In February 2021, the TV show La Hora de la 1 had shaken the Spanish monarchy. At the time, they superimposed a photo of Leonor, who was going to study abroad, with a snapshot of Juan Carlos, the former king in exile. “Leonor leaves Spain, like his grandfather”, could we read on this montage. Very quickly, the administrator of the audiovisual group RTVE, Rosa María Mateo, had deplored “the big mistake” which had occurred while asking for “immediate measures” so that those responsible for “the mistake “ be relieved of their duties. A few days later, screenwriter Bernat Barrachina was fired.“They fired me, like Leonor’s grandfather”he wrote on his Twitter account before bringing the case to court.
Eighteen months later, justice has ruled on this case which caused a stir and in which, despite herself, Leonor of Spain is involved.. Thus, the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid declared null and without real cause the dismissal of the screenwriter. “We declare inadmissible the dismissal to which he was subjected on February 10, 2021, and condemn us RTVE to immediately reinstate him as a non-permanent worker of indefinite duration; under the conditions indicated in the seventh legal basis of these resolutions”, said the judge in his decision. In addition to the immediate reinstatement of Bernat Barrachina, the judgment obliges RTVE to pay the wages not received from the date of dismissal, as well as compensation of 10,000 euros for moral damage suffered since the case.
Leonor of Spain never spoke about it
The Supreme Court of Madrid recognized that the blindfold was “inappropriate”without being “offensive” for the Spanish Crown. In the aftermath, the author reacted with a caustic tweet: “Justice protects me, like Leonor’s grandfather”. As a reminder, the Princess of Asturias is now studying in Wales at the prestigious UWC Atlantic College, an establishment located in the imposing medieval castle of Saint-Donat built in the 12th century, about thirty kilometers from Cardiff. The cost of this degree? 67,000 pounds sterling, or approximately 76,500 euros, which will however be fully paid by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia on their annual allowance. Away from her family, Leonor of Spain recently returned to spend her Easter vacation with Letizia, Felipe and her sister Sofia.
