This Tuesday, the ATP will authorize the coaching trial from July 11, until the end of the season. Some tennis players like Patrick Mouratoglou, former coach of Serena Williams, did not hide their joy. But others like Nick Kyrgios or Carlos Moya have expressed their opposition to this rule.
Small revolution in tennis. L’ATP, which manages all men’s tournaments, has announced that it will authorize coaching until the end of the season. The body will allow coaches to chat with their player from July 11, the day after Wimbledon. This rule could be kept next year if it is unanimous among the players. It will, however, be regulated. Indeed, the coaching will be limited to only a few words and will be done from the stands. It will be forbidden for the coach to enter the tennis court during the match. In case of abuse, theATP has planned to set up a system of warnings and sanctions. This new rule should delight Stefanos Tsitsipas, often penalized because of the advice disclosed by his clan during the meetings. But the first to welcome this provision was Patrick Mouratoglou, former coach of Serena Williams. “ Kudos to the ATP for “legalizing” a practice that has been going on at almost every game for decades. No more hypocrisy » said the Frenchman on Twitter. But this new rule is far from unanimous on the circuit.

“I am totally against coaching”
Coach of Rafael Nadal and former player carlos moya was quick to react. The Spaniard does not share the opinion of Patrick Mouratoglou and made it known during a long interview granted to the media of his country. ” I’m not very supportive of coaching. What makes tennis a special sport is that it is the only sport where you are alone against the other, without the help of anyone. (…) For me, it is fundamental that the player thinks for himself, the work of the coach is already done. It’s like an exam, the teacher can help you, but once the exam starts, you’re on your own. The work of the coach has to be done before the match, the player has to master all the variations, because then things will happen that were certainly not planned in the script. In this sense, I am totally against coaching. Moya said in an interview with Eurosport Spain.
“It is so disappointing to see such a prestigious coach blatantly admit that he has broken the rules of our sport for so long”
On social networks, Todd Woodbridge also took a stand. ” It’s so disappointing to see such a prestigious coach blatantly admit that he broke the rules of our sport for so long.he said, responding to Patrick Mouratoglou onTwitterr. This new rule should continue to make players react. The US Open will therefore be the first Grand Slam to host this rule, which has sparked a lot of debate and reactions in the world of tennis.
