Audiences: What assessment for “Koh-Lanta: The cursed totem” on TF1?

As in 2003 and 2007, not one but two names were engraved yesterday on the list of “Koh-Lanta”. Following the counting of the votes of the final jury, carried out live by Denis Brogniart, François and Bastien were declared co-winners of the edition “Le totem maudit”, which TF1 finished broadcasting this Tuesday after four months of antenna. They therefore share the sum of 100,000 euros.

Weakest final in the history of “Koh-Lanta”

Beaten by “Tandem” on France 3, this final will also go down in history as the one being the least followed in 21 years of adventures. Less than 3 million (2.97 million) aficionados of the cult TF1 show attended, on average, the coronation of the two candidates on Tuesday, according to Médiamétrie. In audience share, this represented 17.5% of the public and 29.3% of Women Purchasing Managers under 50 (FRDA-50), a commercial target in which TF1 is the broad leader. We have to go back three years ago – already June 21 – to find the trace of such a low score for a final. Maud’s victory had federated, that evening, only 3.61 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 12:15 a.m., or 22.9% of the public and 34.9% of the FRDA-50.

The audience score for the final on Tuesday, June 21 is all the more historic as it is also the lowest of this season. Never, since February 22, the second part of the show had gathered less than 3 million viewers. TF1 has decided, for the first time this season, to split its flagship program into two parts.

From the evening of the launch, the indicators promised a difficult season at TF1. 4.27 million viewers had discovered, on average, the 24 candidates of this edition on February 22, for a market share of 23.4% among the public aged 4 and over and 42.8% among women purchasing managers under the age of fifty (FRDA-50). It was the brand’s lowest ever primetime launch to the general public.

Nearly 2 million viewers lost in one year

After four months of broadcasting, “Koh-Lanta: Le totem maudit” federated, on average in the first part, 3.84 million adventurers, or 17.8% of the public aged four and over when the second part retained 3.34 million followers, or 20.9% of people aged 4 and over. By compiling the two parts, this edition of “Koh-Lanta: The cursed totem” convinced, on average every Tuesday, 3.59 million viewers, for a market share of 19.4% on the general public and 34.7% on the FRDA-50target on which the program always performs.

By way of comparison, 4.33 million viewers and 22.2% of the public (38.1% FRDA-50) had followed the “All-Stars” edition “Koh-Lanta: The legend” on average every Tuesday between August 24 and December 14, 2021. “Koh-Lanta: Secret Weapons”, admittedly broadcast on Fridays and during a period of restrictions, had been followed on average by 5.51 million followers between March and June 2021, which represented 25.6% of audiences aged 4+ and 41.2% of FRDA-50s. In one year, the show has therefore lost almost 2 million viewers (1.92 million exactly).

“Koh-Lanta” therefore needs a break. TF1, which has in its bag the return of “Star Academy”, the next seasons of “The Voice Kids”, “Mask Singer” and “Dancing with the stars”, had been inspired by announcing a few weeks ago that the next season of the show would not be scheduled for the start of the school year. Denis Brogniart, on the other hand, promised a return to the program in 2023.
