Pogacar’s funny combination…

When the 4th stage of the Tour of Slovenia arrived, Tadej Pogacar negotiated victory with his teammate Rafal Majka by playing rock-paper-scissors.

A victory that is decided on a wave of the hand? It’s hard not to think back to a memorable stage of the Tour de France, in the second half of the 1990s, where a rider very popular with the French public would have negotiated the final victory with his breakaway companion on the final ascent. A gesture that meant “how much?” and the answer included five figures, in francs at the time, according to the confessions made later by a former leader.

Pogacar plays… and loses

For Tadej Pogacar, there is nothing so sulfurous. The double winner of the Tour de France simply opted for an original strategy to decide who would win the 4th stage of the Tour of Slovenia. The UAE-Team Emirates leader challenged his teammate to a game of shifumi, or rock-paper-scissors. And Pogacar, for once, lost. The Slovenian stretched his arm towards his teammate, and opted for the stone. Bad choice.

This scene, captured by the cameras, confirms two things. That Pogacar does not have the coldness of some great champions of the past, and that he loves having fun on the bike. And the crack of Komenda and his team are out for a walk in this Tour of Slovenia, where they don’t really have any competition.

Before arriving at Velika Planina, and this original trick to decide the winner, Pogacar and Majka had already won their stage. The Pole had imposed himself from the first day, with the consent of his leader. The boss had triumphed solo during the 3rd stage, to take the leader’s jersey. As they each already had a victory, but Pogacar will win the overall, the No. 1 in the UCI ranking could well leave a second success to his faithful lieutenant, who will be very useful to him in July on the Tour de France.

Majka, a very happy lieutenant

“I am very happy with this victory, said Majka, a former sniper converted into a dedicated team member, on the UAE-Team Emirates website. I want to thank Tadej and the whole team. We climbed the last climb knowing that Tadej could beat everyone, but he left the victory to me. We have won three stages and are leaders in the general classification. Every day we do our best to control the race and be as good as possible for the Tour de France. »

After a fifth and final stage without great difficulty, Pogacar should win for the second consecutive year. He is only 3 seconds ahead of Majka, but the Pole is not going to give him bonuses to steal the victory. And the third, the Slovenian Domen Novak (Bahrain-Victorious), is relegated to almost two minutes.
